Slip Disc: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment Options
By Dr. Abhishek Songara · Neurosurgeon & Spine Surgeon, Indore
What is a slipped disc?
The spine's discs act as cushions between the vertebrae. When the soft inner core pushes through the tougher outer ring, it can press on nearby nerves — this is a slipped or herniated disc. It most often affects the lower back and neck.
Common symptoms
Typical signs include back pain that radiates into the buttock or leg (sciatica), numbness or tingling, and muscle weakness. Neck disc problems can cause pain radiating into the arm. Pain often worsens with sitting, bending or coughing.
What causes it?
Age-related disc wear, heavy or repetitive lifting, sudden strain, prolonged sitting, poor posture and obesity all increase risk. Sometimes a disc herniates with no clear single cause.
Treatment options
Most slipped discs improve with non-surgical care — rest, medication, physiotherapy and posture correction. When pain is severe, persistent, or there is significant weakness, minimally invasive or endoscopic discectomy may be advised. Surgery is considered only when it offers the clearest benefit.
When to see a specialist
Seek prompt care if you have severe or worsening pain, leg weakness, or numbness — and urgently if you lose bladder or bowel control, which is a medical emergency.
